NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) is naturally occurring radioactive material, while TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) is NORM that has been concentrated or made more accessible by human activities like mining, oil and gas production, and water treatment. The primary difference is that human technology has altered the concentration and distribution of radionuclides in TENORM, whereas NORM is found in its undisturbed natural state.
NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material)
- Definition: Radioactive elements like uranium, thorium, and radium that are naturally present in the earth's rocks, soil, and minerals
- Examples: Undisturbed rocks, soil, and water
- Characteristics: Exists in its natural form and concentration without any human intervention
TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material)
- Definition: NORM that has been concentrated or exposed to the environment by human activities, such as oil and gas operations, mining, or water processing
- Examples:
- Scale and sludges from oil and gas production
- Waste from phosphate fertilizers and coal ash
- Sludges and filter materials from water treatment plants
- Wastes from metal mining and processing
- Characteristics: Human activities have increased the natural concentration of radionuclides, creating a potential radiation hazard that requires management.
