Groundwater remediation is the process of treating polluted groundwater to remove or convert contaminants into harmless products, making the water safe for beneficial uses like drinking or irrigation. This is achieved through various methods, which are broadly categorized as In-Situ (treating the contamination underground) or Ex-Situ (pumping the water out for above-ground treatment). Common pollutants include petroleum products, chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals, often originating from sources like industrial waste, agricultural runoff, or leaking storage tanks.

Remediation Techniques

  • Phase-Separated and Dissolved Phase Impacts:  A common Ex-Situ method that involves pumping contaminated groundwater to the surface for treatment before returning it to the aquifer or discharging it
  • Air Sparging/Stripping: Involves injecting pressurized air into the groundwater to release volatile contaminants as a vapor, which is then extracted and treated
  • Bioremediation: Uses microorganisms to break down contaminants into less harmful substances
  • Chemical Oxidation: Involves injecting chemicals that react with and break down contaminants in place
  • Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs): In-Situ systems that create a subsurface barrier of reactive materials to treat groundwater as it flows through
  • Dual-Phase Extraction: A combination of pumping groundwater and simultaneously extracting soil vapor from the same well to treat both the saturated and unsaturated zones.

How It Works

  • In-Situ: Treatment is applied directly to the contaminated groundwater in the aquifer. This is often more cost-effective and less disruptive than Ex-Situ methods.
  • Ex-Situ: Contaminated water is physically removed from the ground, treated at the surface using various physical, chemical, or biological methods, then returned to the site.

Why It Is Needed

  • Human Health: Contaminated groundwater can cause serious health hazards if consumed or used for irrigation.
  • Environmental Protection: Contaminants can spread, harming ecosystems and continuing to pollute the environment.
  • Water Resource Preservation: Remediation makes vital groundwater resources usable again for drinking water, agriculture, and industrial purposes.
